How Camp Envy got its name

The question is asked every year by new clients arriving at Camp Envy; “How did this camp get its name?” Let’s take a look back.

A tale of how Camp Envy got its name

SNS Outfitter has been hunting the property that Camp Envy is located on for well over 25 years. The original camp consisted of wall tents set up on the ground. The landowner came to us and asked if we would like to move the camp to an oil well site that was recently abandoned. The new site had a graveled parking area and electricity which was the main reason to move camp.

We built an enclosed kitchen and shower building. The cook tent and all sleeping tents were placed on new wooden tent floors and each had an electrical outlet. It was, without a doubt, the nicest and most modern camp used by SNS Outfitter & Guides at the time. When the guides from the other camps found out how nice the camp was, they were envious. And so it became “Camp Envy”.

The camp is located in an area of Wyoming called the Thunder Basin Grasslands because of the severity of the storms that roll through it. One October, just before the last mule deer hunt of the season, a terrible storm hit. The storm had heavy rain and hurricane strength winds. Luckily some of the guides and the cook were in camp. They were smart enough to park their trucks on the west side of the cook tent and tied the tent’s ropes to their bumpers and grill guards. This was before cell phones so there was no way for the incoming clients and guides to know about the storm and havoc it inflicted on Camp Envy. Once the storm ended, the crew was able to survey the sustained damage.  All the sleeping tents had been ripped and blown away. Not a single one was salvageable.

Boardwalks with solar lighting connect the cook cabin to the bedrooms to prevent tracking mud.

Having learned our lesson, the very next year we built all new buildings to house the guides and clients. This camp was the first completely hard sided camp built by SNS Outfitter & Guides. Camp Envy was once again the envy of those not assigned to guide out of it. Because of a change in ranch ownership, we moved the entire camp to its present location about 8-9 years ago. We now have a prime location, good gravel road and parking lot, electricity and water well.
