For more than 40 years, SNS Outfitter & Guides has been leading unforgettable Wyoming elk hunting experiences. Over those decades, we've watched hunting evolve from the gear and travel preferences to the type of experiences hunters crave most. These days, more and more hunters are turning back the clock and seeking a classic wilderness elk hunt, the kind of adventure Grandpa used to talk about.

The Shift Toward Wilderness Hunts

Back in the 1990s, private land elk hunts were the big trend. Comfortable lodges, easy access, and luxury accommodations were all the rage. But as prices climbed, many hunters started looking for something more meaningful.

Today, roughly two-thirds of the calls to our office are from hunters who want a true wilderness elk hunting experience. They're trading creature comforts for a more rugged setting; wall tent camps, mountain views, and saddle leather.

Why Hunters Are Returning to Tradition

We're seeing more hunters in their 40s and 50s booking guided elk hunts in Wyoming. These are men and women who grew up hearing stories about crisp mornings in the mountains, bugling bulls, and horses breaking trail through fresh snow. They're ready to live those stories themselves.

A traditional Wyoming wall tent elk camp, tucked in a quiet mountain valley, offers everything a hunter could ask for. Picture this: the clip of hooves climbing a steep trail, the smell of pine, the chill of a frosty dawn, and the echo of bugles rolling through the timber. After a long day in the field, you return to a warm wood stove and a hearty meal inside a canvas tent. That's not just hunting, that's elk hunting in the wilderness with Team SNS

Strong Elk Herds, Real Opportunities

Wyoming's public land elk herds are thriving, and many general license areas are producing impressive bulls. Thanks to the state's preference point system, limited quota tags have become increasingly competitive, often requiring high point totals.

For most nonresident hunters, the best opportunity lies in Wyoming's general elk license areas, which can often be drawn with as few as four to five points. These areas offer incredible elk hunting in wild, scenic country without waiting decades for a tag.
