What You Need Before You Ride Into the Backcountry
Archery hunting in Wyoming isn't just a hunt, it's an experience shaped by bugling bulls and miles of rugged wilderness accessed the way it's been done for generations: on horseback.
But before you ever swing into the saddle, there's one thing you need dialed in. Your gear must be legal, functional, and ready for the realities of the field.
At SNS Outfitter & Guides, we work with hunters every season to make sure they arrive prepared. Here's what you need to know.
Know the Legal Basics
Wyoming keeps archery regulations straightforward, but they matter.
Draw Weight Requirements
- Deer, antelope, black bear: minimum 40 lbs
- Elk and other big game: minimum 50 lbs
We recommend being above minimum for elk to ensure clean, ethical shots.
Broadheads & Arrows
- Fixed or expandable broadheads are required
- Cannot pass through a 7/8-inch solid ring when fully expanded
This is one of the most common issues we see. Make sure your setup passes before you arrive
Other Key Rules
- Crossbows are allowed with a 90 lb minimum, 16-inch bolts
- Trackable tech: allowed if nothing transfers to the animal
- Sights: magnifying and range-finding sights are legal
- Archery seasons: no fluorescent orange/pink required
Gear That Works in the Real World
Legal gear is step one. Being proficient and field-ready with your gear is what makes your hunt.
For our horseback wilderness hunts, we recommend:
- A well-tuned bow (50+ lbs for elk) you're confident shooting
- Quality arrows and broadheads plus extras
- Fixed broadheads are essential
- A simple, dialed-in sight and rangefinder
- A small repair kit (strings, vanes, tools)
In the backcountry, reliability always beats complexity.
Wilderness Reality: Pack Smart
When your hunt starts on horseback and continues in rugged country, your gear needs to travel well. Keep it:
- Compact
- Secure
- Easy to access quickly
And always double-check your setup after a ride! Things shift, packs rubbed on trees and ensuring your setup is fine tuned can make all the difference.
Mistakes We See Too Often
A few issues show up year after year:
- Bows that are underpowered for elk
- Broadheads that aren't fixed
- Expandable broad heads are not permitted on SNS Outfitter elk hunts
- Untested gear
- Overcomplicated setups
