Packing Tips

Non-cotton clothing is essential to your safety when you encounter adverse weather conditions in the field. Beyond safety, proper clothing will keep you comfortable and allow you to function optimally, increasing your odds of success and enhancing the enjoyment of your wilderness experience.

Do not overload your hunting pack with unnecessary gear. You need to be able to move quickly in the field and focus on hunting, not carrying a heavy pack. Your guide will be carrying an extensive load of gear including first aid, game bags, field dressing tools, emergency supplies, and water purification.

All personal gear, excluding your hunting pack and weapon, should be packed in two medium duffel bags (25 lb maximum each).

Try This at Home

Pack clothing that can be layered and is not extremely heavy or bulky. We may have conditions ranging from very hot to below freezing in the same day. For example, you may start off in the morning wearing a short sleeve top, long underwear top and bottom, hunting pants, midweight sweater, insulated jacket, rain gear, gloves, and stocking cap. By noon, everything except your pants and short sleeve shirt may be in your pack.

  • Fit your extra clothing in your pack — this is where you will find the benefits of high-quality clothing that offers warmth without excess weight or bulk.
  • Comfortably carry your pack fully loaded with gear, water, lunch, and clothing, weighing no more than 15 lbs.
