How Camp Envy Got Its Name: A Look Back

Every year, new clients roll into camp with the same question:
“So, why is it called Camp Envy?”

To answer that, let’s take a walk down memory lane.

? From Wall Tents to Windstorms: The Early Days

SNS Outfitter & Guides has been hunting this Wyoming property for well over 25 years. Originally, the camp was made up of wall tents set directly on the ground—a rugged but functional setup.

Then the landowner approached us with an idea: relocate the camp to a recently abandoned oil well site. Why? Electricity and a graveled parking area—a luxury in the world of remote hunting camps.

?️ The Birth of Camp Envy

Soon after the move, we built an enclosed kitchen and shower building. Sleeping tents were placed on fresh wooden floors, and each one had its own electrical outlet. At the time, this was hands-down the most modern and comfortable camp SNS had ever operated.

Word spread quickly.

When guides from other SNS camps saw the upgraded facilities, they were envious—and just like that, the name Camp Envy stuck.

?️ The Storm That Changed Everything

One October, just before our final mule deer hunt of the season, a massive storm rolled through the Thunder Basin Grasslands—an area known for dramatic weather.

With hurricane-force winds and heavy rain, the storm tore through camp. Fortunately, a few guides and the camp cook were on-site. Thinking fast, they parked trucks on the west side of the cook tent and tied the tent ropes to their bumpers to anchor it down.

Still, the damage was brutal. All sleeping tents were destroyed—not a single one was salvageable.

? Rebuilding Better Than Ever

The following season, we didn’t just rebuild—we reinvented.

We constructed fully hard-sided buildings to house both clients and guides. Camp Envy became the first permanent camp in SNS history and once again lived up to its name.

About 8–9 years ago, we relocated Camp Envy to its current spot due to a change in ranch ownership. The new location offers:

  • A graveled parking lot

  • Running water from a private well

  • Electricity throughout camp

  • Boardwalks with solar lighting for clean, mud-free walking
