Hunting the World’s Best Red Stags: Why New Zealand Should Be Next on Your Bucket List

NZTHUMB

Where do you go to chase the world's most impressive red stags?

For antelope hunters, the answer is right here in Wyoming.

For red stag hunters, it's New Zealand!

SNS Outfitter Sy Gilliland took a turn on the other side of the hunt this time, stepping into the client role while Jim Gibson of New Zealand Safaris led the way as outfitter. The result? A remarkable fallow deer and an unforgettable Spring 2025 adventure. Congrats, Sy!

This past April, I had the incredible opportunity to explore New Zealand's South Island

—and let me tell you, it's every bit as awe-inspiring as the photos suggest. From glacier-capped peaks and lush rainforests to crystal-clear rivers and rugged ocean coastlines, the scenery alone is worth the trip. But when you add in the chance to hunt true free-range red stag? It becomes the adventure of a lifetime.

Long time client & friend of SNS Outfitter, Richard Lively takes an incredible red stag.

I hunted with New Zealand Safaris, owned and operated by longtime professional outfitter Jim Gibson.

Jim has spent the majority of his life guiding hunters across this breathtaking landscape, offering world-class hunts for red stag, fallow deer, chamois, and tahr. His Four Seasons Lodge is ideally located for quick access to a variety of well-managed private hunting properties.

In fact, some of our own SNS crew have deep ties with Jim and his operation. Troy Gilmore, one of our trusted camp managers, guided for New Zealand Safaris for many seasons. And SNS Guide Ken Decker joined Jim for an unforgettable stag hunt alongside several longtime SNS clients. The consensus? This hunt belongs on every serious hunter's list.

Pro Hunting Guide Ken Decker, tries his hand at hunting in New Zealand and finds great success & memories to last.

If you're dreaming of a red stag adventure that feels as wild and wide open as hunting pronghorn in Wyoming—start looking south. Way south!

Whether you're planning a solo trip or considering bringing along a friend or family member, we wholeheartedly recommend New Zealand Safaris for a professionally guided, world-class hunting experience.
