Retreat to Sheep Trap Elk Hunting Camp
At the start of last fall's elk season, the SNS Outfitter & Guides board of directors saddled up and rode into one of our most storied wilderness elk camps, affectionately known as "Sheep Trap".
This trip wasn't about hunting, it was about experiencing, firsthand, the very same journey that our clients make when they step into the Washakie Wilderness with our team.
Seven miles of easy trail, lined with sweeping views and abundant wildlife, carried them into camp where adventure, camaraderie, reflection & planning for the future awaited them. This group represents a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but every board member shares two common traits: a passion for the outdoors and a deep commitment to ensuring that every SNS client has the hunt of a lifetime!
For some, the horseback ride into camp was a full-circle moment affording them a chance to look back at SNS's roots while appreciating how far the company has come in its 48 years of outfitting guided hunts in Wyoming and Montana. Our outfitter, Sy Gilliland, framed the trip as both a retreat and a reminder of the legacy SNS carries forward: a legacy built on professionalism, friendship and the thrill of western big game hunting.
Life in this elk hunting camp did not disappoint!
While the comforts of wall tents, cots, hearty meals, and even Starlink internet were in place, most of the crew was eager to set aside technology and soak in the wilderness. They swapped stories in the cook tent, brainstormed ideas for the future, and enjoyed top notch camp cooking that fuels both hunters and guides alike. Wildlife encounters added to the magic; a grizzly sow with her cub, moose in the timber, the haunting call of a wolf over the ridge and, of course, the ever-present elk. Each moment was a vivid reminder of the raw beauty that defines Wyoming elk hunting in the backcountry.
When the group rode out of camp, they carried with them more than just stories.
They had witnessed the meticulous planning, detail and hospitality that goes into every SNS camp. As one board member put it, "You may be miles from civilization, but all the comforts are here. We all just had the best time!" That sentiment reflects exactly why hunters choose SNS year after year.
